One way vision, explained.
How perforated window vinyl lets you cover a whole shop window with your branding while you still see out from inside, and how to design it so it works.
One way vision is a perforated vinyl printed on one side and black on the back. From outside, people see your full design. From inside, the tiny holes let you see out, so your window still gives you light and a view.
How does it work?
The vinyl is full of small holes, usually covering about half of the surface (often sold as 50/50). Your eye focuses on whatever is brightest. In daylight the outside is brighter, so people in the street see the printed design, while you look through the holes from the darker inside.
One important thing: night time
The effect depends on light. At night, when the shop is lit inside and the street is dark, the effect reverses: people outside can see in more easily, and the print looks less strong. If privacy at night matters, plan for blinds, or use solid vinyl for some areas.
Where it works best
- Shop and restaurant windows that face the street.
- Offices that want privacy during the day without losing light.
- Car and van rear windows (where allowed).
- Large glass areas where a solid sticker would make the inside too dark.
One way vision or solid vinyl?
| One way vision | Solid window vinyl | |
|---|---|---|
| View from inside | Yes, you can see out | No |
| Light inside | Reduced, but still bright | Blocked |
| Colours outside | Good, slightly softer | Strongest |
| Small text | Not ideal | Works well |
| Best for | Full-window branding | Logos, opening times, details |
How to design for one way vision
- Go big and bold. The holes remove part of the image, so fine details and thin lines get lost.
- Avoid small text. Put phone numbers and opening times on solid vinyl instead.
- Use strong contrast. Bright colours and photos on a dark or bold background read best from across the street.
- Think about the frames. Window bars and door handles cut through the design. We plan the artwork around them.
- Measure every window. Each pane is printed to its exact size, with a little extra for trimming.
